St. John Chrysostom once said, “He who is not angry, whereas he has cause to be, sins. For unreasonable patience is the hotbed of many vices, it fosters negligence, and incites not only the wicked but the good to do wrong.” Of course, St. John Chrysostom was referring to “righteous anger” … the same righteous anger on full display in the biblical accounts of Jesus and John the Baptist, e.g., “You brood of vipers!”
Recently, there has been much commotion in regard to Fr. James Altman’s ten minute video, in which Father expressed great passion and even outrage toward the horror of abortion, and those who lead others to support abortion promoters. The video has been widely acclaimed, and has 730,000 views in just over two weeks.
Passion is urgently needed in these critical times, and outrage is, at times, most necessary to shake all of us out of complacency and into an awareness of the gravity of our times.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen wrote, “The refusal to take sides on great moral issues is itself a decision. It is a silent acquiescence to evil. The tragedy of our time is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction.”
On this podcast, we look at appropriate and inappropriate anger.
