The struggle now going on for the world will never be decided by bombs or rockets, by armies or military might. The real crisis we face today is a spiritual one; at root, it is a test of moral will and faith.” -President Ronald Reagan
Obviously, there is a great deal that needs to be done, and I could never cover it all here. Suffice it to say that the very first three things I would do is …
But, this next dream of mine is something I have been contemplating for quite some time …
I would move to enact what I call, “American Hero Schools.”
Youth would be eligible to enter into this extracurricular training in their Junior Year in High School. It would be a four year commitment.
This would serve as a Military Training School, but would also look, very seriously, to “develop character” in young people. Not just training in military combat, but training in the greatest qualities of humanity … virtues, morals, ethics, values, principles … would assist young people in striving to be the best American citizen they can be. Such qualities as selflessness, sacrifice, civility, honesty, kindness, service and compassion would serve to support and build upon what parents have been doing with their children.
Training would be no less intensive than military basic training. This would serve to instill discipline and strength, as well as a strong work ethic. The hope would be that many would re-enlist after four years, and we would have a mighty military of very well trained young people, who have also received the best of training in building up their character as strong American citizens.
There is much more whirling in my brain about this, but you get the picture.
So, why would young people want to enlist in this “American Hero School?” Because the benefits would be almost impossible to dismiss.
After their four years, they would receive “veteran status,” and they would be eligible for “tuition free” college education. Also, it is about time that all of our veterans are treated as the amazing heroes they are. All veterans would receive “cadillac health insurance” at a very low rate, or even free. Veterans would be given “first in line” status in any doctor’s office or health care institution.
While I am totally against entitlements, I do believe we should reward hard work and heroism. Imagine how sought after graduates of “American Hero Schools” would be in the job market. This, along with the tuition and healthcare benefits, would make it nearly impossible for youth to avoid such an opportunity.
Let’s invest in the next generations … let’s start “American Hero Schools.”
